StartEngine Updates is a powerful tool that allows you and your company to communicate directly with your current investors and followers. When you post an update, it will automatically send an email with the title of the post to your investors and followers, as well as it will create a post visible in the "Updates" section of your campaign page. You should use this section as a way to keep your community engaged and involved with any exciting company news, campaign progress, or milestones reached.

Best practices suggest that you post about 1-2 posts per week. Just enough to stay engaged with your audience but not enough to clutter their inboxes. Some ideas to post an update about:

*   Launch of your campaign

*   Campaign progress milestones: 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% funded, etc.

* Any recent news articles you've been featured in

* Any events you are hosting

* New videos/photos that weren't included in your campaign page

*   Employees of the month

* Any updates on your product

* Research or findings in your industry

*   Fun facts

* Closing note and thank you to your investors

After drafting your update, our team will review the update to make sure they can be posted on our website. This review process can take 24 to 48 hours, excluding weekends, so it is best to send in the updates 1-2 days before you would like for them to be posted.

## Key things to remember about Campaign Updates is to:

1. Not include any information that is misleading or unbalanced

2. Not mix terms and non-terms in the campaign title

3. Not to include outside articles giving investment recommendations or mixing terms and non-terms

## Misleading and Unbalanced Info

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) has rules prohibiting misleading or unbalanced information. [FINRA Rule 2210(d)(1)(B)](https://www.finra.org/rules-guidance/rulebooks/finra-rules/2210) prohibits false, exaggerated, unwarranted, promissory or misleading statements or claims. [FINRA Rule 2210(d)(1)(A)](https://www.finra.org/rules-guidance/rulebooks/finra-rules/2210) requires fair and balanced communication, meaning you cannot omit any material fact that would cause the update to be misleading.

As such, please keep in mind to make sure the information you are providing is not misleading or unbalanced to the readers. StartEngine may ask for you to provide proof regarding the content of your update (like proof of partnership, patents, large purchase orders, etc.), but it is still on you to make sure what you are saying is not misleading or unbalanced.

## Details about Your Raise

With our Updates feature allowing you to share news with your followers and investors about the company and offering progress, we know you want to share exciting news specifically about the offering. While the Updates section is on the campaign page, the titles of updates also get shared via email, which is off the campaign page. To recap information found [here](https://help.startengine.com/en_us/terms-v-nonterms-campaign-communication-Bytta4qVY), you can mix terms of the offering and non-terms on the campaign page, but you cannot mix them anywhere else, including emails. As such, you need to make sure that your titles do not mix terms of the offering and non-terms, but you need not worry about the body of the campaign updates mixing terms and non-terms.

## List of Terms

Terms Communication

Non-Terms Communication

Defined Terms

* The amount of securities offered

* The nature of the securities (i.e., whether they are debt or equity, common or preferred, etc.)

* The price of the securities

* The closing date of the offering period.

* The planned use of proceeds (i.e., “With your investment, we will do \[X\]”); and

* The issuer’s progress towards meeting its funding goal

Implied Terms

*   Offering goal in dollars

* End date described in the number of days left in a campaign

* % of bonus shares being offered

Examples

*   Minimum investment amount

* Amount raised without discussing the funding goal

*   Number of investors

* Regular communications and advertising (e.g., press releases, ads, newsletters, etc.) that do not mention any terms

As a way to visually see the difference between “terms” and “non-terms,” here is an example offering.

With all campaigns listed on our platform, we have this box \[seen above\] next to the header on your campaign page. The details that have “yes” next to it are “non-terms,” and you can use this information with other non-term communications. The details in the “no” category are “terms” and cannot be included in any communications unless they only contain other terms in communications off our platform.

### Examples of Allowed Titles:

1. For $256.00, you can invest in our campaign.

    1. This title is allowed because it only contains the minimum investment amount (non-term).

2. Our REG CF campaign is offering common shares at $4.00 per share.

    1. Even though this sentence includes multiple categories of terms (type of stock offered and price per share), you can say this because no non-terms are included.

3. We are celebrating over $485K committed investments from 150+ investors.

    1. Since this statement only includes the amount raised without discussing the funding goal and the number of investors (non-terms), this is acceptable.

4. Our campaign is ending in 2 days.

    1. This title is allowed because it discusses the closing date (term) only.

### Examples of Disallowed Titles:

1. For $256.00, you can buy 64 shares of our company!

    1. This is not allowed as it includes the minimum investment amount (non-term) and implicitly includes the price per share (term).

2. Join the 4,814 people who invested in our REG CF campaign at $4.00 per share.

    1. This is not allowed because it mixes a non-term (number of investors) with a term (price per share).

3. We are celebrating over $485K committed equity investments from 150+ investors.

    1. Since it mixes the amount raised and number of investors (non-terms) with equity (term), this is not allowed.

4. You only have 2 days left to join the 4,814 people who invested in our company.

    1. This is not allowed as it implicitly states the closing date of the offering (term) with the number of investors (non-term).

## Outbound Links in Your Update:

We love that you want to include links in your campaign updates! They are great ways to show articles that feature your company, interviews, or studies about your products.

### Terms and Non-Terms in Articles:

Just like you, articles written about your company’s offering cannot [mix terms and non-terms](https://help.startengine.com/en_us/terms-v-nonterms-campaign-communication-Bytta4qVY). Even if it is the author’s mistake, you should not recirculate the article. For example, if the New York Times publishes a non-compliant article, you can’t link to it via social media or share it on your campaign page. Otherwise, it would be in violation of SEC’s Regulation Crowdfunding, and you may be in trouble with the SEC.

As such, we cannot include that article anywhere in the post \[not the title or the body\]. Also, it is best suggested that when you see an article mixing terms and non-terms, please reach out to the publisher to revise or remove the article.

### Investment Recommendations

Our policy is that we can’t approve an update that links to a third-party independent research report if it contains investment recommendations. Investment recommendations are any speculations about the quality of the investment or if the article gives a grading or ranking.

The burden is a little higher when it’s a partnership: the article can’t contain investment advice or any speculation about the quality of any company or investment opportunity. This makes it pretty much impossible to link to a paid partnership article in a campaign update.

Please remember that updates need to be truthful and not misleading, as well as follow our terms and services.

## In Summary

1. You can post about a wide variety of topics for your campaign updates, but make sure the information included is not misleading or unbalanced.

2. You cannot mix terms and non-terms in the title of your campaign, but you can mix terms and non-terms in the body.

3. You cannot link to any articles that mix terms and non-terms (and it is best suggested to reach out to the publisher to have the article removed/revised).

4. You cannot post any articles that give investment recommendations.
